The English Lake District, also known as Lakeland or The Lakes is an area of breathtaking scenery containing many steep fells (Mountains), beautiful valleys and an abundance of lakes (Waters) and Tarns.
It was an immense pleasure to be asked to capture the development of Lingholm into paint through the triptychs and a developing body of work that explores the Estate and the surrounding areas. My art is based upon his personnel relationship with a location a lived experience en plein aire. By immersing myself in a walk through the landscape, stopping when the light or view changes it not only gives a firsthand real experience of a place or situation but also relates the painting I make directly to the topography, the weather as well as the flora and fauna. I try to record my emotional reaction quickly into watercolour sketches, through a pochade (small oil painting 24x30cm) and a written narrative or poem.. The walks can be a short gentle meander along the Lake Shore or an all out mountain experience lasting days, in many cases solo.
Rob also walks and paints in the Welsh and Scottish Highlands, the Outer Hebrides the Spanish Sierra and Portugal’s Montado. He has had recent painting trips to the Italian Dolomites and Iceland.
Lingholm’ s resident artist .
Rob Miller was born in Lancashire's Ribble Valley. He has painted in the North of Britain for over 30 years. Rob studied for a Dipl Art with a distinction in painting at BIHE Art College and an MA in Art History with the O.U. His studio in the Grade 11 listed Cotton Mill Falcon Mill, nestles at the foot of the Pennine Moors. Another studio in the Lake District at The Lingholm Estate enables Rob to explore the beautiful gardens, wooded grounds and the surrounding fells thoughout the seasons.
Rob Miller presents a version of the landscape stripped down to its essential parts of light and form. He uses a range of focal qualities gleaned from
a study of old masters such as Paul Cezanne and John Constable studied and reassembled. His colourful but sensitive paintings display a continuous elemental, sense of movement and raw energy. This places the viewer into the process of both abstracting the painting and knowing the place. Rob is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
" Rob Miller’s light filled landscape paintings have much in common with the post-impressionist spirit: exuberant colour, bold brush marks and a clear vision that celebrates the subject as much as the materials in use". (Lisa takahashi Jacksons, London)
“ There is a great depth of understanding of our world in Robs work which at the same time are extremely beautiful and enjoyable. (Linda Schultz Barefoot Gallery Wetherby)
"Rob Miller is a landscape artist; his paintings of the UK and Europe display a maturity and depth of understanding that set him apart from his peers" Phil Harwood Director Ascot Studios Gallery Lancashire
